WORK PACKAGES & TIMELINE

The ASMA work plan is divided in 7 work-packages and 15 deliverables, partially independent from each other, where the seventh package gathers all of the results.

Work Package 1 is focused on the formulating of a rudimentary method for teaching the basic aspects of singing to elementary school children. This will be accomplished via extensive research on the state-of-the-art of vocal techniques as well as on the introduction of novel specialized training tasks for children, to be also implemented on the proposed digital tools platform.

In Work Package 2 we aim at creating a methodology for the preliminary evaluation of the students’ overall vocal quality. For this propose, a phonetic map of each student will be created based on their individual phonetogram. Such knowledge will allow teachers to have access to an objective representation of each student’s vocal quality, to be used both for the design of personalized teaching methodologies for their vocal training as well as for the identification of potential vocal issues, which may need special attention.

Work package 3 focuses on the development of a vocal warm-up tool offering a wide range of practice exercises. Vocal warm-up is an essential part of vocal education. It is essential for maintaining high vocal quality and preventing vocal injuries.

Work Package 4 will concern the development of a set of interactive tools assisting users monitor their tuning and beat/rhythmic feel. These tools will have dual functionality. On one hand they will function as regular tuners and metronomes, monitoring tonal and rhythmic accuracy and showing/recording deviation. As a novel added functionality, the same tools will be used to train students perform with tonal accuracy musical intervals of non-western scales and maintain their beat in complex time signatures, such as 7/8, 5/8 etc.

Work Package 5 focuses on the development of a novel educational tool evaluating the overall performance of students when singing complete songs. Such a task is different and more complex than the ones described in the previous WPs as it is multidimensional, and attempting to combine assessments of the students’ performances in terms of tonal and rhythmic accuracy, tuning, and vocal placement, with aesthetic aspects of musical expressivity. This tool will be paired with a newly compiled database of children’s songs of various cultural heritages, selected for their suitability as educational material.

In Work Package 6 we will implement a set of tools assisting elementary school students sing as part of a school choir. Special focus will be given on vocal homogeneity and tonal accuracy in polyphonic singing.

The Work Package 7, which is the project’s final work package, will be aimed toward the preliminary evaluation of the software tools platform, its improvement and re-evaluation. Also a significant part of this WP will be concerned with communicating the project and its evaluation results to the international scientific community.
